The main purpose of this paper is to offer an interpretation of the canonical statement of justice as fairness (A Theory of Justice) as a deeply egalitarian, even radical, argument. In order to do so, the categories of justice as fairness strongly related to the egalitarian and distributive meaning of the rawlsian liberal model and, specifically, those aimed to solve the problem of social justice, are accurately revised, namely, the fair equality of opportunity and the difference principle. The paper evaluates the relative weight of each of these categories in the rawlsian argument for social and economic equality.
