Abstract

This paper discusses the need for players in science, i.e., active scientists, to have enough philosophical training to critically analyse the scope of their own expertise. Such analysis should begin with an understanding of the definition of science. We exemplify the need for such education by recurring to synthetic of biology. We show the dangers of moving to non-scientific fields when the scientist is imbued with a Faustian science aimed at obtaining a product –the synthetic biological entity– with a waning interest in studying it from the perspective of Promethean science, which gradually conveys an understanding of living entities.
