The Penultimate Reasons for Morality in Tugendhat

This paper explores the idea of a weak or penultimate justification for morality in the context of the whole of Tugendhat’s philosophy reorganizing his ethical work. Among the diverse aspects of moral justification, the formal concept of morality linked to feelings is revisited before moving into the crucial point: the grounds for modern ethics. A distinction is made between, on the one hand, the comparative reasons of an egalitarian contractualism vs. other theoretical alternatives and, on the other hand, the motives that may lead (in a Heideggerian way, actually) an autonomous individual to be understood in moral terms.
