Giordano Bruno’s Cosmo-Ethical Project: From The Ash Wednesday Supper to the Modern Citizen

This paper addresses Giordano Bruno’s cosmo-political project from a primarily philological and hermeneutical perspective. Using textual evidence extracted from his six Italian dialogues (1584–1585) —The Ash Wednesday Supper, On Cause, Principle and Unity, On the Infinite, Universe and Worlds, The Expulsion of the Triumphant Beast, Cabal of the Horse Pegasus, and The Heroic Frenzies— we have aimed to contribute to the state of the art on the possibility of a political philosophy in the Nolano. We begin, in the second section, by presenting the antagonists of these dialogues (pedantism, Christianity and Aristotelianism). In sections three and four, we analyse, respectively, the main aspects of Bruno’s cosmo-ontological and political project, attempting to explain the inherent links between the two. The relationships between both projects allow us to defend the thesis that Giordano Bruno took part in the subjective emancipation necessary for the constitution of the modern citizen.
