Abstract

The thought of Max Scheler and Martin Buber is essentially anthropological. Scheler’s approach centres on the question of love, while Buber’s focuses on that of relation. Although both lived in the same period and had personal contact, and although their research topics are similar, their ideas have never been brought into dialogue. Based on an interpretation of Scheler’s philosophy centred on the primacy of love, it can be shown that Buber’s philosophy of dialogue is not as far away from Scheler’s positions as Buber himself thought, and at the same time, this dialogue opens up horizons from which the Jewish thinker’s proposal can shed light on some problems that Scheler does not satisfactorily resolve, such as the givenness of the beloved in love and the connection between knowledge and love.
