The paper critically analyzes justifications of cultural rights within a liberal egalitarian framework that defines justice according to a conception of equal opportunities. The outcome of this paper is that this sort of justification is not possible in the context of Rawls’ and Dworkins’ theories. It should be possible within a theoretical framework oriented towards welfare, like Cohens’ Theory. But from a liberal point of view these theories are not very attractive. Cultural rights are in tension with the liberal egalitarian aim of offering equal opportunities to everyone.
