Equality and Desert, a Conflict of Values?

Since at least three decades, the concept of equality —in particular, distributive equality— has been at the centre of the contemporary discussion on distributive justice. The idea that underserved inequalities should be eliminated and that deserved inequalities should be preserved is one of the most relevant ways in which the ideal of equality has been recently defended. The main scope of this article is to argue against the intrinsic value of equality thus understood by pointing to an important confusion: the one between the value of equality and the value of people having what they deserve.
