Jacques Rancière: “When the Word Changes Field”

This article focuses on three shifts that I have observed in part of Jacques Rancière’s work, following his break with Louis Althusser and within the framework of his extensive research on French workers’ archives from the first half of the 19th century. The first shift occurs when, in a context of great social upheaval, a new proletarian word emerges, determined to speak, which reveals another field or place of enunciation, altering the relationship between capital and labor. The second is of a different nature, and occurs when words are transported beyond the identity field, allowing their traces not to rely on the bodies or trades that support them. In the third shift, Rancière focuses on the figure of the carpenter close to the saint-simonism movement, Gabriel Gauny, and the singularity of his life.
