Wendy Brown’s Critique of Rights

The objective of this article is to examine Wendy Brown’s critique of rights and show the relationship between social movements and democracy. Brown does not censure rights in general, but rather how certain social movements took them within the liberal horizon. Her political commitment makes her focus on certain sectors of feminism to ask if legal battles are sufficient for a profound mutation of the structure the social relations of our societies or if they contribute to the reproduction of the current system. Brown points to this second option. Her position regarding rights is paradoxical. She recognizes their inability to bring about greater innovation; however, she knows that they are indispensable instruments of power in the political context. Therefore, his proposal helps to discern tensions and limits in which some social movements are inserted, and, at the same time, allows to dispel a certain naivety in the way in which said transformation must occur.
