At the end of the twentieth century american historiography coined the term republicanism to define the ideology underlying american revolution. A few years later, the concept was normatively apropiated by political philosophy in order to present an alternative to the dominance of liberalism. In the former case the continuity between the republican tradition and the revolutionary ideology was stressed. In the latter, there was an intent of republican topics revival in order to create a new ideology. I will term this project neo-republicanism and I will highlight sorne of the difficulties it faces.
