The purpose of this paper is to consider the contribution of news journalism in the democratic system that requires civic virtues. And to think also the contributions of news journalism and the media system to the ideal of deliberative democracy. Contribution to configure what is here called the republican face of journalism. That is, the theoretical and policy dimensions of journalism in terms of commitment to the democratic system. In the information society, to recover the ideal of the good life for building a genuine democracy requires information and channeling mechanisms that enable citizen participation. Can the media meet these two elements which characterize the contemporary civic virtue?
