It is usual to understand rape in terms of consent, sexual desire, and will. However, this way of understanding the nature of rape tends to ignore the victim's experience of harm as an essential component of rape. Based on the contributions of the cultural historians Mithu Sanyal and Joanna Bourke and the philosophers Linda Alcoff, Martha Nussbaum, Ann Cahill, and Roxanne Gay, the article develops new arguments against the simplified use of the concepts of consent, sexual desire, and will in the definition of rape, pointing out the limitations of this conventional way of understanding it that has become popular in the contemporary world.
