Amartya Sen and Javier Muguerza´s ethical proposals share deep egalitarian and libertarian roots. In reviewing the nature of ethical individualism -neither methodological nor ontological- defended, it is perceived that they go "beyond the social contract", opening up space for the individual features incorporating the essential sociability of the individual. Muguerza, using autonomy as a focal element on which to raise equity, brings near to Sen´s The Idea of Justice, suggesting more than a general theory of justice an active practice against injustice. The against injustice proclaimed by Amartya Sen has clear connections with the imperative of dissent proposed by Muguerza. Ethical individualism expresses the core of social tying and adopts the individual as last element responsible for decisions that involve moral responsibility. Autonomy as a basic dimension of equality, in Muguerza´s terms, converges with the importance of taking into account the very act of choice and personal responsibility that Sen stressed.
