Abstract

This purpose of this paper is to investigate about the notion of “passivity” which characterizes the subject in Emmanuel Levinas ethical project. A subject that is, and is dedicated to, the Other (Autri) beyond all voluntary decisions and any factual relationships. The “passivity” is the notion that permits the understanding of the levisianic contexture of subjectivity, its mode of constituting, of “materializing”, as something which we will call its “second condition”. Passivity appears in Levinas’ thinking as the notion that allows him to articulate his ethics, as far as it is based in a responsibility which occurs in the extreme abandonment of the certitudes of the “self”, the “I”.
