Ortega and genetics. Contributions of Ortega y Gasset’s thought to the ethical-philosophical discussion on gene editing

The best way to show the relevance of philosophers of the past is to use their thought to address problems of the present. This article uses the thought of Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955) to approach the ethical-philosophical implications of gene editing. After a brief introduction to gene editing and its current situation, the relationship between Ortega’s thought and genetics is analyzed on two levels. First, it shows how some of Ortega’s ideas-such as the notion of lack of nature, supernature, or self-fabrication-could serve to establish philosophical bases from which to understand the impact of gene editing technologies on human beings. Secondly, by exposing several specific points in the gene editing debate where Ortega’s ideas are valuable.
