This book (Marguerite Yourcenar, 1951) is much more than a historical novel: of course there are Literature (fictions), but also History (facts) and above all a great reflection about the art of living, when the man was alone and without gods (Flaubert dixit). The Emperor tells us how he builds himself –operari est esse- upon the unity of Ethics and Aesthetics, with a combination of knowledge, discipline and hedonism. This paper shows the keys of his personal and political project, around the Greek ideas (Humanitas, Felicitas, Libertas) and the Roman exercise of power. And that includes bodies, feelings and actions like concepts from the point of view of every day life.
