Abstract

This article tries to think in parallel the notion of «inquiétude» from an ontological point of view in Leibniz’s and from a social and political one in Montesquieu. This permits not only to compare two philosophies that has been little compared, but also to resolve one classical problem that often appeared in the interpretations of Montesquieu: this notion of inquiétude could be thought as the «principle» of government of modern republic, that one that Montesquieu has never made explicit in his work. Consequently, the first part of the article will be dedicated to the analyse of some chapters of the book II of the News Essays of Leibniz, the second one to the chapter 27 of the book XIX of the Spirit of Laws.
