Pain as an Encounter with Alterity

This research focuses on three modalities of experiencing pain which enable a horizon of encounter with alterity. Firstly, it is carried out a phenomenological analysis of suffering as an element of estrangement, a heterogeneous presence that breaks into existence and alters its normal course. The next issue to be discussed is violence, understood as an intersubjective relationship in which an individual interacts with another through pain, either inflicting it or suffering it. The paper concludes with some reflections on compassion, inasmuch as it implies an opening towards intersubjectivity and an encounter with an alterity that is perceived and manifested mainly through its suffering dimension.
