Tocqueville’s Aristotelian Plot: An Exploration of the Behavioral Effects of Despotism

This paper aims to demonstrate that the despotism category analyzed by Tocqueville mainly affects subjectivity and not the social logic of modern democracy. To demonstrate this premise, it explores the influence of Aristotelian political philosophy on the French author’s moral psychology, in order to show that the empirical attributes of this connection allow us to verify an “assented” conception of despotism that conditions behavior, to the detriment of interpretations that advocate an exclusive structural congruence of its effects.
