Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the accuracy and purpose of French philosopher Simone Weil's reading and reception of the tragedy Prometheus Bound attributed to Aeschylus. To this end, her understanding of Prometheus as a Greek representation of Christ avant-la-lettre will be studied within the new politicisation and democratisation of Classical Studies, that is, the theoretical framework of Classical Reception Studies: its precedents as intermediate receptions, its scrutiny as an autonomous element and, finally, the type of relationship that links Aeschylus's work with Simone Weil's own. Following this development, the conclusions drawn will point to the use of the Greek tragedy in order to justify her metaphysical and political statements, counter-hegemonic for our contemporary society.
