Civility as a horizon for democracy in Étienne Balibar

This article analyzes the risks to which democracy is exposed in our societies, now that the increase in anti-immigration attitudes and hate crimes committed against migrants has been noted. To this end, a dialogue will be established between the diagnoses of the social sciences and the contributions of Étienne Balibar, which will allow us to show that, rather than in a situation of conjunctural crisis, we are facing a risk of democratic regression whose source lies in the structural features of modern democratic politics and its conflicts, which are always violent. Finally, it will be shown that Balibar’s democratic proposal does not seek to suppress violence, but to integrate it into political forms whose horizon is emancipation and transformation.
